Subject: School Nurses
To All,
On December 21st I discussed the school nurse issue with the State Board.
The Board said it did not wish to consider any additional rule changes regarding
school nurses. Therefore, the dual endorsements for school nurses and
associate school nurses are the means by which you must meet the requirements
for nursing services in the schools. The use of LPNs must be restricted to their
scope of practice as defined by the State Board of Nursing. LPNs may not
be counted for purposes of meeting the 1:500 (nurse:student) ratio as required
by State Board Rules. I have discussed this matter with Jeff Francis. He
is continuing discussions with representatives of the nursing associations to
determine what options might be available for small schools in light of State
Board Rules and the scope of practice for LPNs and RNs.
