Sharonlee Trefry School Nurse Scholarship

Sharonlee Trefry, MSN, RN, NCSN, FNASN was a nurse for nearly fifty years, 18 years as an active school nurse working in disparate schools with diverse populations. She embraced leadership positions and served in local, state and national professional school nurse organizations. These include president of the VSSNA, VT representative to the NASN Board, VT State School Nurse Consultant and ultimately elected as President of the National State School Nurse Consultants. Sharonlee was inducted as a Fellow in the National Academy of School Nursing. The honor of Fellow is the most prestigious recognition that members can receive from the National Association of School Nurses (NASN). It is a symbol of superior achievement in the school nursing profession and exceptional contributions to NASN and the profession of school nursing (NASN, 2025).

From 2012 to 2021, she served all the schools and school nurses of Vermont as the school nurse consultant, elevating the position to one of immense usefulness and leadership prior to and during the difficult days of the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.  She contributed to nursing articles and textbooks, and led and presented at the School Nurse Advisory Committee, conferences, and countless board meetings. Her understanding of the nurse on the ground as well as issues surrounding nursing was articulated well in all of these positions, and countless school nurses benefited from her education and expertise.

The VSSNA Sharonlee Trefry School Nurse Continuing Education Scholarship is awarded to an individual from the VSSNA who will strive to “be like Sharonlee” by learning new skills that articulate the principles and practices of school nursing, and advocate for students and school nursing as Sharonlee did in her amazing career.
